NAHN's Farmers' Market Outreach:
The First Six Weeks

From July 17 to August 25, 2011, NAHN's farmers' market coordinators have been busy!  Completing twelve out of twenty outreach days, Becki (Uptown) and Pam (Rogers Park) have represented nine different NAHN agencies and collected baskets and baskets of fresh, local produce!

This produce, donated by market patrons and market vendors, is taken directly to a highlighted NAHN agency where it is cooked or distributed to our neighbors.

Freedom Food Drive a Success

Jennifer Kepp during her Freedom Food Drive on August 20

Early this summer, Jennifer Kepp--A Chicago resident and employee of the Halsted Whole Foods--noticed an alarming trend.  "I noticed that when peopel came through the check out line with gluten-free or dairy-free foods, it (the cost) really started to add up," she said.   "I couldn't imagine how hard it would be for people with wheat or dairy allergies to buy those foods on a budget!"

This realized prompted Jennifer to organize a food drive at the Lakeview Whole Foods on August 20, 2011.  From 10 A.M. until 6 P.M., Jennifer asked shoppers to buy and donate foods that would fit special dietary requirements.  Benefiting five NAHN agencies--Lakeview Pantry, Common Pantry, Ravenswood Community Services, EZRA, and Christopher House--the "Freedom Food Drive" was a wild success.  To see the food that Jennifer we able to offer NAHN agencies, follow this link.

SNAPshots and

About Hunger and Resilience

Last November, NAHN brought you SNAPshots--a local photography exhibit about hunger and SNAP benefits on the Northside of Chicago.

This coming autumn, St. James Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Chicago is hosting Michael Nye's photography exhibit, About Hunger and Resilience alongside SNAPshots!  Nye's exhibit--a national commentary on hunger--combines black and white images with personal narratives to give hunger a face and a story.  SNAPshots, a visual conversation about hunger and SNAP benefits on the Northside of Chicago, has toured the seven Whole Foods locations in Chicago and Evanston AND appeared at the Chicago Food Policy Summit in March 2011 since its debut at the Chicago Photography Center last fall.

Nye's 50 portraits and NAHN's SNAPshots will be on display around the cathedral space and open to the public throughout the entire month of October 2011.

Recycling Pilot Program

NAHN's group of four talented Northwestern Industrial Engineering students presented their solutions to NAHN's recycling problem at NAHN's June picnic.  Their approach to this issue was thoughtful and innovative...and even presented a way that NAHN could turn a surplus of cardboard into dollar bills!
